Slavic mythology has always fascinated me.
I had long entertained the idea of making this carpet.
I was reading a lot of history books, folklore, fairytales,
collecting ideas and images. But I lacked an underlying
idea, something to tie it all together.
And then, I had a dream.

I dreamt holding a book in my hands,
an album of paintings by an unknown artist,
full of amazing images, heretofore unseen.
In my dream I was turning the pages,
and what I saw filled me with happiness.
Under my very eyes the images were coming
to life, stars were gleaming in the dark blue sky,
transparent mermaids sat on branches
swinging above water, and moonlight glistened.
Everything was moving, breathing, fluttering,
glowing in countless shades of blue.
The images seemed magic. In my dream
I realized I had always longed to see this,
and there it was, but I didn’t know the artist.

I woke up spellbound, and for several minutes
my mind was still searching who the artist might be.
And then – what joy! – I realized that it was me,
that those images were the fruit of my imagination.
That day I started working on the carpet.
